HANARO

Rockets we build ourselves, reaching for 3 km.

HANARO is the rocket club of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Seoul National University, running since 1995. Students who love rockets come together to design and build them, and prove them in real launches.

About the team

We take flight together

Getting a rocket off the ground takes skills from many fields and the effort of many people. Subsystem teams for propulsion, aerostructures, avionics and recovery come together, and through systems engineering their different ideas and designs are fused into a single rocket.

How the team is organised

  • Propulsion Mixes the solid propellant (KNSB), designs and builds the motors, and proves their performance in static fire tests.
  • Aerodynamics and structures Designs the airframe and fins, analyses the structure, and builds the body and parts. Flight simulation gives the stability margins and the expected apogee.
  • Avionics Develops the flight computer, sensors and radio link. Records altitude and attitude in flight and decides when to deploy the parachutes.
  • Recovery Designs the parachutes and ejection system that bring the vehicle back safely, and verifies deployment in recovery tests.

The rockets HANARO has built

HANARO has designed and built a range of rockets every year.
Behind each one lie countless questions and trials, days and nights of work, and a passion for a higher sky.

9,137ft

Apogee

HARANG 2 is the rocket that reached the highest altitude in HANARO's history. It competed in the 10,000 ft category of IREC, the world's largest collegiate rocket competition, and became the first Korean university team to successfully verify the complete flight sequence from ignition to recovery.

Apogee

HANARO also competes every year in NURA, Korea's collegiate rocket competition. In 2026, to push past its previous limits and take on a higher level of technology, the team developed a hot-staged two-stage rocket and succeeded in both stage separation and recovery.

Fin-controlled rocket

HANARO is researching adaptive control to overcome the limits of conventional PID control. The controller adjusts its parameters in real time according to the system's response, and with it the team has achieved roll stabilisation and a working control programme.

Building a single rocket takes considerable funding: research and development, shipping, administration and more. The results on this page were made together with the sponsors who have supported us so generously.
